Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project by Spencer Wells details the global genographic project that Wells heads, which is attempting to gather 100,000 or more DNA samples from people around the world, especially indigenous peoples, or peoples who have been in the same location for a long period of time, in order to better understand the details of human migration.

Much has already been learned about this from studies of mitochondrial DNA. For example, it has been proven that the peoples of Polynesia migrated across the sea from Asia. Though Thor Heyerdahl's theories of a South American population of Polynesia had long been out of favor, it had never been proven as solidly untrus as it now has using mitochondrial DNA.
