For genealogists just getting started, there are an amazing array of sites. Here are some of the ones I would recommend:
- Ancestry.com. This site, run by one of the major genealogy publishers has tips and lots of databases. Ancestry also has a lot of good books and charts in their bookstore.
- US Genweb is a non-profit collaborative effort to share genealogical data.
- Cyndi's List is the Yahoo of genealogy, listing and categorizing almost 100,000 genealogy websites.
- You can get help from people at the Genealogy Helplist
- Also, you might need to restore photos
One of the most important tools you will need is software. I think the best two programs out there are:
- Family Tree Maker. This is a very usable program with lots of features and functions. It has more than enough features for most amateur genealogists, and is easy to use.
- The Master Genealogist. This software is not as easy to use as FTM, but it allows advanced users to enter an unlimited amount of data on an unlimited number of people.
